RV Lighting

Have you got way too many fluorescent fixtures within the ceiling of one’s RV? Manufacturers like to fill a rig with more than is essential — it appears impressive plus it adds to the price. You could be shining too much light in the living area, or using an excessive amount of electricity to produce the lighting, or both.

A prudent RVer requires a rational way of lighting. LED lighting offers two solutions to slow up the lighting in an RV to some reasonable level.

My situation is often a typical example. The fifth-wheel RV that we use inside my basecamp has sixteen 12-volt fluorescent fixtures, each containing two F15T8 tubes. Each fixture uses 30 watts (2.2 amps) of 12-volt ability to produce a simple yet effective 1,100 lumens of white fluorescent light.

If all fixtures are started at the same time, the wattage is 480 watts (40 amps), and this creates a rated luminosity of 27,480 lumens. But due to the limited light efficiency of fluorescent fixtures, the sixteen fluorescents only present an effective 17,600 lumens (1,100 lumens each).

Indeed, since electrical efficiency in the ballast and lights is only about 50%, they are pumping 240 of those watts into heating the atmosphere within my rig. Within my humble opinion, that’s way too much lighting (and heating) for the RV, even a large one with 400 sq-ft of space.

My sixteen fluorescent fixtures are sorted into four groups of three each and four singles. By turning OFF two of a few of the fixtures in each group, we could reduce our consumption to 240 watts (20 amps), as well as have an effective luminosity of 8,800 lumens. That assists, however the resultant lights are lumpy. It is actually too bright in some areas and dim in other regions on the rig. Therefore we still an excessive amount of lighting for many with the space we stay in, and not enough elsewhere.

Once i switched to LEDs, I intentionally reduced the volume of light from each fixture by disconnecting the ballasts and installing a particular 12-inch period of MyT.fLED LightStrip in each fixture. Each fixture now offers an fully effective 480 lumens of sunshine, pointing downward into your room, and so the total real lighting is 7,680 lumens, nearly whatever gott by turning off eight in the fluorescent fixtures. And already the lighting is constant during the entire rig, just as we’d like it. Simultaneously We have reduced the electrical load for lighting from 480 to 96 watts, (40 amps to 8 amps).

Being an added bonus, on warm summer evenings, I no longer need to take nearly 750 watts to power the atmosphere conditioner to eradicate the excess heat made by the fluorescent fixtures using inefficiencies. That could easily equal to a different 3kwhr per evening, thus i am saving 4.2kwhr per evening. While you live throughout southern California which reaches just $0.90 per evening, but do this for four months and it also quickly can add up.

For a retail worth of $37.20 each, the cost of converting all sixteen fluorescent fixtures is less than $550 while using the 10% quantity discount. I receive better light where I need it without heat or fluorescent radio interference or having to replace fluorescent tubes. But it takes about 5 minutes to convert a fixture.

Using LEDs can be a win-win solution.
